Nebula
Atrium Installation for Owens Illinois Flagship Magma Factory
Completed November 2024 | Bowling Green, KY
Nebula is an 8-foot-diameter installation composed of organically arranged glass bottle segments, suspended 20 feet above in the atrium of the Owens-Illinois Magma Factory entrance. This striking piece embodies the innovative spirit of O-I’s new modular glass production system, which utilizes smaller, regional factories operated within a network. This approach fosters local manufacturing, supports regional clients—such as the thriving craft bourbon distilleries in Bowling Green—and reduces the environmental footprint of shipping across vast distances.
For this installation, Phosphene repurposed bottle glass produced by O-I, enhancing it through cutting and polishing to create layered, overlapping patterns that resemble a visual network. These connections echo the interconnected systems of the Magma factory, symbolizing community and collaboration at the heart of the operation.
Designed to be experienced at the start of a workday, Nebula aims to offer a moment of wonder and reflection for workers as they enter the space of repetitive assembly. The installation not only celebrates craftsmanship and innovation but also provides a contemplative pause—inviting those nearby to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the beauty and significance of their work.
